• Non-metallic: This category encompasses a wider range of descriptions, including:

  • Silky: Having the appearance of silk.
  • Earthy (dull): Having a matte, non-reflective surface.

Distinguishing Physical from Chemical Properties

It's crucial to differentiate between physical and chemical properties. Physical properties can be observed without altering the substance's chemical identity. Examples include color, density, melting point, and boiling point. In contrast, chemical properties describe how a substance reacts or changes during a chemical reaction. Examples include flammability, reactivity with acids, and oxidation states.

Since observing a substance's luster doesn't involve any chemical reactions or changes to its composition, it's firmly categorized as a physical property. You can assess the luster of a mineral simply by looking at it; the mineral itself remains unchanged.
